BALEARIC ISLANDS OVERVIEW

Spain is ever popular with travellers; a country rich in heritage and varied in geography, a holiday here attracts all sorts – from the independently minded backpacker hiking up in the Catalan hills, to the package holidayer, soaking up the sun on one of the country’s numerous hot sandy beaches. One of the most popular spots are the Balearic Islands, made up of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. These islands are very popular with visitors but what differentiates each one? Here’s a brief outline of which island is best for your particular type of holiday:

  • Best for hedonists – Ibiza has traditionally been the party island of the Balearics and for good reason; the island is geared around the tourism scene with clubbing as very much part of the culture. Some of the best clubs in the world are located here, and with parties held on the beaches, club nights that go on through the day and everyone up for a good time, Ibiza is number one destination for hardcore partygoers.
  • Best for activities – Majorca being the biggest island has the greatest range of activities; there’s lots on offer such as scuba diving, cycling and golf - the island is large enough to cater for multiple tastes. Go diving or perhaps spend a day doing a hike up north in the Sierra de Tramuntana Mountains. There’ll be something to suit everybody here.
  • Best for families – Menorca, often called ‘the Jewel of the Balearics’ wins here. It has a much more relaxed, laid back atmosphere than its sister islands yet its size means that the kids won’t get bored. There are beaches aplenty, and sailing around the island’s many coves and inlets is a popular activity here. Thrill-seekers can go kayaking, waterskiing, or, if you prefer to be land-based there are a number of resorts which offer horse-riding excursions or lessons around the island.
  • Best for relaxation - Formentera, the smallest island is the least commercialized of them all. The beautiful white sandy beaches are often deserted and whilst there are some bars, they are rather more sedate than those on neighbouring islands. Many visitors make a day trip to the island so if you want to stay for longer you’ll need to book well in advance.
